What is Placement?
The specific location where an ad appears on a platform.
Definition
Placement refers to where your ad is shown within a platform's ecosystem. Meta placements include Feed, Stories, Reels, In-stream Video, Search Results, and the Audience Network. Each placement has different ad specs, user behavior patterns, and performance characteristics. Automatic placements (letting the platform decide) generally outperform manual selection because the algorithm optimizes delivery. However, creative should be adapted for each placement format.
Example
A brand uses automatic placements but creates placement-specific creative: square images for Feed, vertical video for Reels/Stories, and compact visuals for the right column. This approach gets 25% more conversions than using the same creative everywhere.
